The recently released Lilac Review Interim Report is a stark reminder that the entrepreneurial landscape in the UK is far from equitable for disabled founders. While entrepreneurship is often hailed as a path to independence and success, the report reveals that disabled entrepreneurs face a unique set of challenges that make this path significantly more difficult.
Overwhelming Barriers
One of the most striking findings of the report is the overwhelming nature of entrepreneurship for many disabled individuals. From navigating inaccessible systems to battling financial constraints, the journey to success is fraught with obstacles that their non-disabled counterparts rarely encounter.
Inaccessible Gateways
The report highlights how fundamental gateways to business support, such as HMRC, Companies House and even website creation platforms, are often inaccessible to disabled entrepreneurs. This inaccessibility isn’t just about physical barriers, it encompasses cognitive, sensory and energy-related challenges that can make navigating these systems a daunting task.
The Burden of Proof
Another significant issue raised in the report is the constant requirement for disabled entrepreneurs to prove their disability to access support. This process is not only time-consuming and emotionally draining but also perpetuates a sense of mistrust and alienation from the very systems designed to help them.
Disabled entrepreneurs are not asking to be given special treatment. In fact, many said they don’t like the idea of being seen as “other” or to be seen as inspiration just because they are Disabled. What they are looking for is to be given equal access to opportunities and to be given the freedom to start and run and grow their business to the best of their ambition and abilities.
The Lilac Review, Interim Report
The Need for Change
The Lilac Review calls for a radical shift in how we approach entrepreneurship for disabled individuals. It recommends a move towards a trust-based system, eliminating the need for constant proof of disability. It also emphasises the importance of including disabled entrepreneurs in the design and development of business support programs and financial services.
A Call for Collaboration
The report is a call to action for government agencies, financial institutions and business support organisations to work together to create a more inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. By simplifying processes, removing barriers and providing tailored support, we can empower disabled entrepreneurs to thrive and contribute to the UK’s economic growth.
